Video quality, audio and MP4 conversion

iCap saves the video stream it can actually obtain from the site. It does not upscale a stream beyond the quality supplied by the site. A page may offer 1080p while the stream iCap can detect is a different, lower-resolution one.

Can I choose 1080p or another quality before saving?

iCap does not currently have one universal control for choosing 1080p, 720p and so on before every download. Sites can send different video streams depending on the device and playback method, and iCap shows the streams it can detect.

Changing the browser device mode between iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows can sometimes make a site expose a different stream. This does not guarantee a higher-quality result. Some sites split high-quality video and audio into separate streams or use protected delivery methods that iCap cannot obtain.

Does “Convert to MP4” improve the quality?

No. MP4 conversion changes the container into a format that is easier to handle; it does not create detail that is missing from the source stream. A 360p stream cannot be turned into a true 1080p copy just by converting it to MP4.

Audio drifts out of sync or drops out after MP4 conversion

iCap previously had a bug where audio could drift or drop out partway through segmented videos converted to MP4. This was fixed in iCap 8.5. Update from the App Store first and try the same video again.

If it still happens on the latest version, please check, when possible, whether the video is fine when saved as HLS and only breaks after Convert to MP4. That difference is very useful for diagnosis. Send the page URL and the result through the contact form.

I used to get higher quality from the same site

This can be caused by a site changing how it delivers video, not only by an app update. Update iCap, try a different device mode, and if the result is unchanged, tell me the page URL, the quality offered on the site, and the quality shown in iCap.
